Vegetable Garden Plants
Great vegetable garden plants is what we all crave. Most salad plants can be grown easily with a little help from these guides. The quality of seed you get will determine a large part of your successful gardening. Trying to plant old seed is a large reason that they don’t germinate. If you have only a small space like an apartment you should look at the dwarf varieties and then read indoor vegetable gardening to get a start.
Check out the information on the seeds and select disease and insect resistant varieties when possible. When gardening outside see if there is a variety for your area.
Plant Starting

Growing Carrots
Starting vegetable garden plants indoors and then transplanting them will give you a head-start. The more North you live the better this works. Check out the vegetable garden plants guides as to how far in advance you should start your seeds. There can be a real variety in temperature depending upon whether you live in the country or city. Some large cities can be 5 to 10 ° F higher then the country. You can start your plants indoors in almost anything that is food-safe. Plant them and place them in a windowsill. The ready-made peat pellets and trays work great and are low cost.
Vegetable garden plants should be hardened if you have started them indoors for about 2 weeks. Withhold water and lower the temperature. As long as there isn’t too big a difference in temperature, you can place them outside for a few hours a day. Some plants like lettuce and cabbage need hardening. But tomatoes and peppers won’t tolerate it, these are hot weather plants.
Water
Water is where a lot of people make mistakes with vegetable garden plants. Plants need about one inch of water per week. But this is a general guideline. Using a moisture meter is the most accurate way to be sure how wet your soil is. When it is hot and dry you may need to water three times a week. When watering, put it on the roots and not the leaves. Some diseases are started by water remaining on the leaves.
Weed Control
Weed control is important because as weeds grow, they use the nutrients and water your vegetable garden plants need. Mulch is great in controlling weeds. If you don’t have grass clippings, leaves or compost use newspapers or cardboard. If you have enough mulch, stack it 4 to 6 inches deep around your plants. Don’t cover or shade them though. Hoe out the small weeds before you put mulch on.
Seed Saving
Saving your seed for next year can be a challenge. The largest problem is with cross-pollunation of different varities of your vegetable garden plants. If you plant only one variety of a plant then this is viable. Some plants like cabbage, kohlrabi, kale, collards, broccoli and cauliflower all intercross freely, so each must be well isolated from the others if seed is to be saved for next year.
